Overview

The SEP Hub brings together leading researchers and innovators from across academia and industry to reduce waste, promote greener manufacturing practices, and advance the circular economy.

The SEP Hub is a 7-year, £13.6 million EPSRC-funded programme led by the University of Warwick in collaboration with the University of Manchester and University College London. The Hub is backed by over 60 industry partners, including Jaguar Land Rover, Polestar, Mitsubishi, NETZSCH, SUEZ, and Barratt Redrow.

Engineering plastics have long posed a significant sustainability challenge, despite the crucial role they play in meeting performance, economic, and low-carbon targets across the automotive, construction, and electrical sectors. With new legislation now mandating product reuse, material recycling, and minimum recycled content, the SEP Hub is set to tackle these demands through its Five Grand Research Challenges and Three Scale-up and Integration themes, shaping the future of sustainable UK manufacturing.

Research Challenges.

The SEP Hub will work with industry to address five interconnected Research Challenges driving sustainability across the plastics value chain:

  • Overcoming barriers to the adoption of sustainable materials.
  • Harnessing emerging digital technologies.
  • Enabling reuse and remanufacturing to extend product lifetimes.
  • Developing advanced recycling and upcycling methods.
  • Creating robust sustainability assessment frameworks.
